Rick Harrington: Music

Bertram Harris

(Rick Harrington)
2008-04
Written by Rick Harrington
This song addresses the consequences and regrets of a life of addiction. It is loosely based on the life of my paternal grandfather.
My name is Bertram Harris
I’ve known sorrow all my life
From Wichita to Tahlequah
I’ve laid a trail of strife
I never cared for no one
Now no one cares for me
The seeds I’ve sown now all have grown
And thorns are all I see

Once I had a wife and children
Where they are now I don’t know
I left them near McAllister
Some thirty years ago
There’s a white house with green shutters
It’s a haunting memory
A crying child in her arms
And two more at her knee

Chorus:
If I could turn back time
I would not cast this life away
I’d pour this drink into the ground
I’d fold these cards and walk away

Bartender, set me up another
I’m feeling good tonight
Lady Luck is in the room
And I feel her smiling bright
A few good hands are all I need
To set me straight again
If I play ‘em right tonight
This bad run’s sure to end

Chorus
