What About You

(Rick Harrington)
2008-04
Written by Rick Harrington
This song was inspired by the Biblical book of Ecclesiastes and ponders the meaning of life in light of observations in the natural world.
The sun comes up then it goes back down
Autumn leaves float to the ground
The rivers run down to the sea
They return again where they used to be
But what about you and what about me?

What about you and what about me?
Are we nothing more than what we see?
Do we live and toil and love and cry
Without a rhyme or reason why?

The wind it blows where it wants to go
Summer rains soon turn to snow
The sky grows dark and it changes hue
Still there’s nothing different; there’s nothing new
But what about me and what about you?

What about me and what about you?
Have we done all we’re meant to do?
Do we live and toil and love and cry
Without a rhyme or reason why?

All that stands shall one day fail
Like an empty sigh in a stormy gale
Like crumbling stones on a hill of green
Is this the end of everything?
But what about you and what about me?

What about you and what about me?
Is this our only legacy?
Do we live and toil and love and cry
Without a rhyme or reason why?
